Sod Installation Prices in Winnipeg (2027)

Updated October 9, 2026·7 min read

Those are the ranges we quote across Winnipeg every week. Below is where your yard will likely land inside them, what pushes a price up or down, and how to tell if a quote you've received is fair.

    Price by Yard Size

Most Winnipeg backyards fall between 400 and 1,000 square feet. Here's what full installation looks like at each size, using our current per square foot range:

Yard sizeFull installationDelivery only (sod + delivery fee)
    300 sq ft$750 to $1,350$210 to $360
    500 sq ft$1,250 to $2,250$300 to $500
    800 sq ft$2,000 to $3,600$435 to $710
    1,000 sq ft$2,500 to $4,500$525 to $850
    1,500 sq ft$3,750 to $6,750$750 to $1,200

Not sure how big your yard is? Pace it off. One normal step is about 2.5 feet. Multiply length by width, then add 5 to 10 percent for cuts and curves.

What's Included in an Installed Price

When we quote $2.50 to $4.50 per square foot, the number covers the full job, not just the grass:

Removal of old grass, weeds and debris

Grading so water runs away from your foundation

Topsoil to bring the surface up to a proper growing depth

Manitoba-grown Kentucky bluegrass sod, cut fresh for install day

Laying, rolling and trimming around beds, walkways and fences

Cleanup and a written watering plan for the first three weeks

If a quote looks much cheaper than this, check which of those lines is missing. It's usually the topsoil or the grading.

Why Your Yard Might Cost More or Less

    Soil and grading

Winnipeg sits on heavy clay. A new build in Sage Creek or Bridgwater often has only an inch or two of black soil over compacted builder clay, so we bring in more topsoil. An older yard in River Heights or St. Vital with decent soil usually needs less. Our Winnipeg clay soil guide explains why this matters so much.

    Access

If we can drive a skid steer straight into the backyard, the job moves fast. If every load of soil goes through a 36 inch side gate by wheelbarrow, labour goes up. Tight lots in Transcona and the older parts of St. Boniface are common examples.

    Removal

Stripping a thin, weedy lawn is quick. Removing old landscaping, rock beds or a dead lawn full of quackgrass takes longer and adds disposal.

    Yard size

Larger yards cost more in total but less per square foot. Setup, travel and equipment are spread across more area.

    Sod Delivery Only

If your soil is already in good shape and you're comfortable doing the work, sod delivery in Winnipeg is the cheapest route. A standard pallet covers about 450 square feet. Plan to lay it the same day it arrives, because sod left rolled on a pallet in the sun starts to yellow within a day.

    Sod vs Artificial Grass Cost

Artificial grass costs more upfront, roughly $10 to $16 per square foot installed, so that same 500 sq ft yard runs about $5,000 to $8,000. It lasts 15 to 20 years with no mowing or watering. We wrote a full sod vs artificial grass comparison for Winnipeg if you're weighing the two.

How to Tell if a Quote Is Fair

A fair quote in Winnipeg is in writing, lists the main line items (removal, topsoil depth, grading, sod, labour, cleanup) and is based on someone actually looking at your yard. Be careful with a single number sent over text without a site visit, or anyone asking for full payment before work starts. Our guide on what to look for in a Winnipeg sod installer covers this in more detail.

    When to Book

Sod goes down in Winnipeg from about mid-May to mid-October. The spring rush fills up fast, so many homeowners book their estimate in March or April. Booking early doesn't change the price, but it does get you the date you want.
