Question 1

How much does it cost to install new sod in Winnipeg?

Accepted Answer

Installation costs in Winnipeg generally range from $2.50 to $6.00 per square foot. This typically includes the cost of the sod, delivery, and professional labor. Prices can vary based on the amount of site preparation required and the size of the project.

Question 2

What factors affect the price of a landscaping quote?

Accepted Answer

The main variables include the current state of your yard (whether old grass needs to be removed), the amount of topsoil required for grading, accessibility for equipment, and the total square footage of the area.

Question 3

Is it cheaper to DIY or hire a professional?

Accepted Answer

While DIY saves on labor, professional specialists have the heavy equipment needed for proper grading and soil compaction. Many homeowners find that the cost of renting sod cutters and tillers, plus the risk of improper installation, makes hiring a pro a better investment in the long run.

Question 4

How do I get an accurate estimate for my backyard?

Accepted Answer

Most specialists in our network offer free estimates. You can start the process by providing your yard's approximate dimensions and a few photos of the current terrain through our request form.

Question 5

What happens if my new sod dies shortly after installation?

Accepted Answer

Sod is a living product that requires immediate and consistent care. While specialists ensure a healthy installation, survival is almost entirely dependent on the homeowner's watering schedule. Most contractors provide a care guide but cannot offer a survival guarantee once they leave the site.

Question 6

Why is my new sod turning yellow or brown at the edges?

Accepted Answer

This is usually a sign of "moisture stress." In Winnipeg's dry summer heat, the edges of sod rolls dry out first. Increasing water frequency to ensure the soil underneath is soaked usually corrects this within a few days.

Question 7

How much topsoil is needed before laying new sod?

Accepted Answer

To ensure a healthy root system in Winnipeg's heavy clay soil, specialists typically recommend a base of 3 to 4 inches of premium screened topsoil.

Question 8

Can you lay new sod over existing grass or weeds?

Accepted Answer

No. For sod to survive, it needs direct "soil-to-root" contact. Professional installers will always remove the old vegetation and till the underlying soil before laying fresh rolls.

Question 9

When is the best time of year to install sod in Manitoba?

Accepted Answer

Sod can be installed as soon as the frost leaves the ground (usually late May) until it returns in October. Many homeowners prefer spring or fall to take advantage of natural rainfall and cooler temperatures.

Question 10

How long do I have to wait before I can walk on my new lawn?

Accepted Answer

It is generally recommended to keep foot traffic (and pets) off the new sod for at least 14 to 21 days to allow the delicate root system to knit into the soil.

Question 11

Is artificial turf worth the investment in Winnipeg?

Accepted Answer

Many homeowners choose artificial turf to solve "muddy backyard" problems. While the upfront cost is higher than sod, it eliminates the need for mowing, fertilizing, and watering, and it remains green through the entire winter.

Question 12

Can artificial grass handle -40°C winters and heavy snow?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Professional-grade synthetic turf is designed with UV-protected, frost-resistant fibers. It is built to withstand extreme freeze-thaw cycles without becoming brittle or cracking.

Question 13

How does artificial turf handle dog urine and waste?

Accepted Answer

Turf specialists use a perforated backing that allows liquids to drain through to the base rock layer. For pet owners, antimicrobial infills are often used to neutralize odors and keep the yard hygienic.

Question 14

Does artificial grass get too hot in the summer?

Accepted Answer

Like any outdoor surface, synthetic turf can get warm in direct sunlight. Many modern products feature "cool-fiber" technology, and a quick spray with a garden hose can instantly lower the temperature on hot July days.

Question 15

How long does a professional artificial turf installation last?

Accepted Answer

Quality synthetic grass is typically rated to last 15 to 20 years with minimal maintenance, such as occasional brushing to keep the fibers upright.

Question 16

What does "site preparation" actually involve?

Accepted Answer

Proper prep includes excavating the existing surface, grading the soil to ensure water drains away from your home's foundation, and compacting the base to prevent future sinking or pooling.

Question 17

Do I need to install a sprinkler system with new sod?

Accepted Answer

While not mandatory, an underground sprinkler system ensures your investment is protected with consistent watering. If you don't have one, you will need to manually move sprinklers several times a day for the first two weeks.

Question 18

When can I first mow my newly installed sod?

Accepted Answer

You should wait until the roots are firmly established, usually 2 to 3 weeks after installation. Set your mower to the highest setting for the first several cuts to avoid stressing the new grass.

Question 19

Are the landscaping specialists in your network insured?

Accepted Answer

We connect homeowners with established local professionals. We always recommend that homeowners ask their selected specialist for proof of current liability insurance and WCB coverage before work begins.

Question 20

How long does the average backyard project take?

Accepted Answer

Most standard residential sod or turf projects are completed within 1 to 2 days, depending on the amount of prep work and the size of the area.
