Cost Over 10 Years
Sod wins on day one. Artificial grass narrows the gap every year you're not buying fertilizer, running sprinklers, paying for mowing or reseeding worn patches.
For a 500 sq ft yard, sod might cost $1,250 to $2,250 to install, plus a few hundred dollars a year in water, fertilizer and seed if you do the work yourself, and more if you hire a lawn service. Artificial grass costs $5,000 to $8,000 once. Over 10 years the totals get much closer, and if you pay for weekly lawn care, turf can come out ahead. If you'd rather spend Saturdays at the lake than behind a mower, that time counts too.
How Each Handles Winnipeg Weather
Winter and freeze-thaw
Manitoba-grown Kentucky bluegrass is bred for our winters and goes dormant under snow. Artificial grass rated for cold climates handles minus 40 without cracking. For both, the real risk is water. Sod drowns in low spots after snowmelt, and turf can heave if it's laid without a compacted, draining stone base.
Spring melt
Our clay holds water. A yard that turns into a pond every April needs grading fixed first, no matter which surface goes on top.
Summer
July and August can push past 30°C. New sod needs daily watering in a heat wave. Artificial grass gets warm in direct afternoon sun, and a quick spray with the hose cools it down.
Our longer piece on whether artificial grass is good for Winnipeg weather goes deeper on winter performance.
Which One Fits Your Yard
Choose sod if:
You want real grass for kids to play on
Your yard gets at least 6 hours of sun
You're working with a tighter budget upfront
You don't mind mowing and watering from May to September
Choose artificial grass if:
You have dogs that have already worn out the lawn
Big trees shade most of the yard
It's a small yard, side yard or play area where grass never takes
You want the yard to look the same in April as it does in August
Plenty of Winnipeg homeowners do both: sod in the open sunny area and artificial grass in a dog run or under the spruce trees. Our dog friendly yard guide shows how that split usually works.
What Matters More Than the Choice
A cheap install of either will fail. Sod laid straight on builder clay lifts like a carpet within two summers. Artificial grass laid on dirt without a compacted gravel base ripples and holds water. Ask any installer how deep the topsoil or base will be and how they're handling drainage. If they can't answer clearly, keep looking.
